AI Is Reading Your Reputation. Is Your PR Strategy Ready?

Your next customer may not Google your organization. They may ask ChatGPT.

When they do, what will it say?

Will AI know your organization is a trusted expert, or simply not know you at all?

That question is becoming a new part of reputation management. As more people use AI to research companies, leaders, and services, the information AI finds online can shape the answers it gives. And according to Muck Rack’s latest research, much of that information comes from a source public relations professionals have relied on for decades: earned media.

In other words, the rise of AI does not make public relations less important. It makes being credible, visible, and trusted more important than ever.

AI Is Looking for Proof

Think about how you choose a business.

If a company says, “We are the best,” you may not believe it.

But if a respected news outlet writes about that company, an industry expert talks about its work, and customers share their experiences, you have more reasons to trust it.

AI works in a similar way.

Muck Rack’s What is AI Reading? report looked at more than 25 million links cited by ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini across 17 industries. The findings are striking:

  • 84% of AI citations came from earned media
  • 27% came from journalism
  • Only 0.3% came from paid or advertorial content

And this is not a one-time finding. Muck Rack has seen earned media account for between 82% and 89% of AI citations across three editions of its research.

The takeaway for business leaders is simple: AI is looking for credible sources to help build its answers.

That makes your organizations reputation, and where that reputation appears online, more important than ever.

PR is No Longer Just About Getting Press

For years, companies measured PR by media placements, website traffic, and brand awareness. Those things still matter. But there is a new question to add:

When someone asks AI about my industry, does my organization show up?

And if it does, is the information correct?

Think about a healthcare company with a CEO who has deep knowledge of healthcare policy. The company could simply say on its website, “Our CEO is a healthcare expert.” Or, that CEO could:

  • Provide expert commentary to a healthcare reporter
  • Write an article about an emerging industry issue
  • Appear on a podcast
  • Speak at an industry conference
  • Share useful insights on LinkedIn

Now there are multiple credible sources discussing that person’s expertise. That is the difference between telling people you are an expert and building evidence that you are one. And that evidence can help shape what AI finds when someone asks about the company or its leaders.

What This Looks Like in the Real World

Muck Rack’s research shows that AI platforms do not use all the same sources. ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini have different citation patterns which translates to there is no single trick for “ranking” in AI.

However, there is a strong connection between timely PR and AI visibility.

Muck Rack found that more than half of journalism citations come from the past year, with citations highest soon after a story is published. In other words, staying visible matters. One great story from five years ago may not be enough to tell AI (and your audience) what your organization is doing today.

This is where a consistent public relations strategy becomes so valuable.

You are not simply trying to get one big story. You are building a steady stream of credible information about your organization, your leaders, and the issues you know best.

Two Things Executives Can Do Now

First, ask AI about your organization.

Open ChatGPT, Gemini, or another AI platform of your choice and ask questions your customers might ask.

Try:

  • What is [your company] known for?
  • Who are the leading experts in [your industry]?
  • What are the best [services] companies in [your market]?

Now, look at the answers.

Are you there? Are your competitors there? Is the information correct? What sources does AI use?

This simple exercise can give you a starting point for an AI visibility audit.

Second, build a reputation around what you want to be known for.

Pick one or two topics where your organization has real expertise. Then start talking about them

Write. Speak. Pitch reporters. Answer questions. Share insights. Offer data. Comment on trends.

The goal here is to create credible, useful information that others can reference.

That is the heart of good PR and is becoming an important part of AI visibility.

Where a Fractional Communications Consultant Fits

This is where a fractional communications consultant can make a real difference.

Many organizations do not need a full-time chief communications officer. But they do need someone who can step back, see the big picture, and build a communications strategy around their business goals.

A fractional communications consultant can help you:

  • Identify what your organization should be known for
  • Build an executive visibility strategy
  • Find the stories that are worth pitching
  • Develop thought leadership content
  • Build relationships with the right media
  • Monitor what people say (and AI, too!) about your organization
  • Measure whether your visibility is growing

Most importantly, they can connect all of these pieces because PR, content, reputation, and AI visibility are no longer separate conversations. They are all part of the same story.

Your Reputation Is Already Being Read

AI is changing how people find information, but it’s important to recognize that the founds of trust has not changed.

People still want credible sources. They still look for expertise. They still want proof.

The only difference is that increasingly, they may ask AI to find that proof for them.

So ask yourself:

If your next customer asked AI who they should trust in your industry, would your organization be part of the answer?

If you don’t know, that’s a good place to start.
